Later decisions citing this case, by decade. The current decade is in progress, and our corpus holds fewer opinions from the most recent years, so the latest bars are undercounted — not a real decline.

Most-quoted passages

The sentences later courts lift from this opinion, ranked by how many decisions quote each — the parts of the opinion doing the work. These counts are smaller than the citation total above because most of the 5 citing decisions cite the case generally; a passage count includes only decisions quoting that exact language verbatim.

  1. ““There is no reference, in terms, either in the specification or the claim, to notches or recesses in the end-pieces. The drawings, however, show the end-pieces formed with notches or recesses, and the patentee incidentally refers to a use to which the end-pieces may be applied in which, inferentially, the notches or recesses would be necessary. This falls far short of making the notches or recesses an essential feature of the invention. It cannot bo doubted that the reference in the specification is to be treated merely as rec-ommendatory of a form of lock-plate for a specified use, such as is shown in the drawing.””
