Most-quoted passages
The sentences later courts lift from this opinion, ranked by how many decisions quote each — the parts of the opinion doing the work. These counts are smaller than the citation total above because most of the 20 citing decisions cite the case generally; a passage count includes only decisions quoting that exact language verbatim.
“it is not necessary in a criminal charge to negative an exception or proviso which is not a part of the definition or description of the offense. (Citing cases.) Of every complaint which does not negative such a proviso or exception, it is possible to say (as do the defendants here) that all the facts alleged in it may be true and still the defendant may be entirely innocent of crime. But such complaints are, nevertheless, held sufficient by the authorities just referred to and many others which could be cited.”
