“STR is an acronym for short tandem repeat. A tandem repeat involves multiple copies of identical DNA sequence arranged in direct succession in a particular region of a chromosome. A short tandem repeat is a tandem repeal in which the repeat units are three, four, or five base pairs (a base pair has two complementary nucleotides).
