Three of McDonald's acquaintances were prepared to testify that he orally confessed to them on separate occasions. At trial, Chambers' lawyer called McDonald and introduced the written confession into evidence. The State then elicited testimony about the repudiation, plus a fresh denial by McDonald. Chambers was denied permission to cross-examine McDonald as an adverse witness based on Mississippi's "voucher" rule.
