Most-quoted passages
The sentences later courts lift from this opinion, ranked by how many decisions quote each — the parts of the opinion doing the work. These counts are smaller than the citation total above because most of the 9 citing decisions cite the case generally; a passage count includes only decisions quoting that exact language verbatim.
“A defendant who is convicted of an offense or is the person owing a duty of support in a support proceeding shall be liable for all costs of the prosecution or proceeding, whether or not costs are assessed by the court, and such costs are recoverable by the party or parties who incurred the expense. However, such defendant or person shall not be liable for costs if acquitted or if the prosecution or proceeding is dismissed. In addition, any judge of a district court, parish court, city court, traffic court, juvenile court, family court, or magistrate of a mayor’s court within the state shall be authorized to suspend court costs.”

Griffin“Because we “have no jurisprudence on this issue, we find it appropriate to reference other jurisdictions to show some of the considerations that they have taken into account at such hearings: the extent of defendant’s education in the United States; the duration and extent of the defendant’s presence in an English-speaking community; and the extent to which the defendant was able to communicate with police after arrest. 4”

This constitutional article is the source of specific rights due a defendant in a criminal trial: such as the right to an “impartial trial,” “to confront and cross-examine the witnesses against him,” “to present a defense,” and to “testify in his own behalf.””
