Is used by Sir Edward Coke for an interpreter. (2 Inst. 616.) It seems that the word is mistaken, and should be Latiner, because lieretofore he that understood Latin, which, in the time of the Romans, was the prevailing language, might be a good interpreter. Camden agrees that it signifies a Prenchman or interpreter, and says the word is used in an old inquisition. It may be derived or corrupted from the French latinier, q. d. latiner. Cowel; Jacob.
