For the sake of gain. A phrase descriptive of the intent or motive with which property is taken in cases of theft. Such an intent seems to have been essential to constitute theft a crime in the civil law. But the authorities have not always agreed as to whether such a motive must exist to render the taking of property larceny, at common law.
