The officer whose duty it is to take charge of a bankrupt's estate on adjudication of bankruptcy, pending appointment and qualification of assignee, is technically styled messenger; his functions also involving service of the notices. The messenger of the English court of chancery is an officer whose duty it is to attend on the great seal, either in person or by deputy, and to be ready to execute all such orders as he shall receive from time to time from the lord chancellor, lord keeper, or lords commissioners. There are also certain persons attached to the court of bankruptcy styled messengers, and whose duty consists, amongst other things, in seizing and taking possession of the bankrupt's estate ddring the proceedings in the bankruptcy.
