Dictionary of Terms and Phrases Used in American or English Jurisprudence
A short name; one nicked or cut off for the sake of brevity, without conveying any idea of opprobrium, and frequently evincing the strongest affection or the most perfect familiarity; e.g. " the Little Corporal," " Old Hickory," " Rough and Ready." When the question of identity arises, as where a nickname occurs in a will, deed, or bond, it is competent to show that the individual or corporation whose true name was not used was nevertheless meant to be indicated by the nickname or sobriquet.
