Dictionary of Terms and Phrases Used in American or English Jurisprudence
One who accepts the Christian religion, but denies the authority of the Pope of Rome; Christians in this country and in western Europe being divided into Roman Catholic and Protestant. Neither the term Roman Catholic nor Protestant is broad enough to include any who do not, nominally at least, assent to the truth of Christianity as a distinct system of religion. A Mohammedan, a Jew, a pagan, or an infidel cannot' properly be called either a Catholic or a Protestant, not being a Christian. 'When the children of Protestant parents, or those born in a Protestant country, renounce they cannot any longer be reckoned or assumed to be of the Protestant religion; and so of all the denominations of Christians, and aU other systems of religion.
