In ecclesiastical law, the circuit of an archbishop's jurisdiction. Sometimes a county; and more generally an out-country governed by a deputy or lieutenant.

The word is also sometimes used figuratively to signify power or authority; as in saying that it is the province of the court to judge of the law, that of the jury to decide on the facts.
Provincial constitutions
