The commonwealth or state; the mass of the people in their collective capacity; as in the expression it concerns the republic that there should be an end of litigation.
2.
That form of government is called a republic, or a republican government, in which the sovereign power is confided to and immediately exercised by representatives and officers chosen by popular will.
