To oppose. Resist properly describes an opposition by direct action and quasi forcible means.

The offence of resisting an officer of the United States may be complete, although no violence is used or threatened. If a person says he will not go with the officer, and does not go, it is a resistance. United without his being assaulted, lieaten, &o. "Woodworth v. State, 26 Ohio St. 196.
