V. To adjourn; to forego; to prolong. Respite, n. -. an adjournment; a delay; a postponement. In its application to sentences of offenders to punishment, respite is equivalent to reprieve; but it is not confined to use in this connection. A respite is a temporary suspension of the execution of a sentence; a delay, forbearance, or continuation of time.
