An account is said to be taken with annual or semiannual rests, when, at the end of the items for each year or half-year, the accountant pauses in his entries, and strikes a balance, upon which interest is allowed and charged; and at the next rest a new balance is ascertained, which likewise draws interest. In chancery, when the equities of a suit for an account are such that the defendant ought to pay interest, the obligation is enforced by the chancellor's directing the account to be taken with annual (or semiannual) rests.
