A pecuniary aid granted by the legislature to the crown; or, in modern American usage, to any enterprise believed to be of public benefit, and to deserve government assistance. A subsidy is an aid, tax, or tribute granted by parliament to the king for the urgent occasions of the kingdom, to be levied of every subject upon his property, at such rate as parliament may think tit.
