Dictionary of Terms and Phrases Used in American or English Jurisprudence
The word " supplies," in parliamentary proceedings, signifies the sums of money which are annually voted by the house of commons for the maintenance of the crown, and the various branches of the public service. The right of originating a grant of supplies is vested in the house of commons; and the exercise of this right is practically a law for the annual meeting of parliament for redress of grievances. But a grant from the commons is not effectual in law, without the ultimate assent of the queen and of the house of lords. May Pari. Pract. ch.
