Dictionary of Terms and Phrases Used in American or English Jurisprudence
To confirm by oath; to establish; to show to be true. Particularly used of making formal oath, as required by law, to accounts, petitions, pleadings, and some other papers. Verification: the making oath to, or other legal confirmation of, a paper. Verify sometimes means to confirm and substantiate by oath, and sometimes by argument. In legal proceedings, it is generally employed in the former sense.

Verification is not identical with authentication. A notary may verify a mortgagee's written statement of the actual amount of his claim, but need not authenticate the act by his seal.
