The amount that is insured, and for which underwriters are liable for loss under a policy of insurance. It is limited by that specified in the policy to be insured, and this limit may be applied to an identical subject only, as a ship, a building, or a life; or to successive subjects, as successive cargoes on the same ship, or successive parcels of goods transmitl a certain canal or railroad duriug a specified period: and it. may also be limited by the terms of the contract to a certain proportion, as a quarter, half, etc., of the value of the subject or interest on which the insurance is made; Jackson v.
