A Dictionary of Law

Performing; serving; attending to the duties of an office; as, the acting — executor, partner, commissioner of patents, reporter of decisions. Attached to an officer's title, designates not an appointed incumbent, but merely a locum tenens who is performing the duties of an office to which he does not himself claim title.®
