Attornment
The consent of a tenant to the grant of his landlord. 3 The acknowledgment by a tenant of a new landloi'd, and an agreement to become tenant to the purchaser.* As the feudal obligation between lord and vassal was reciprocal, the lord could not alien his seigniory without the consent of the vassal. This consent was expressed by what was called " attorning " — professing to become the tenant of the new lord: a doctrine afterward extended to all leases for life or years.
