Originally, a bulwark or rampart; afterward, a public walk or road on the side of a demolished fortificacion; now, a public drive. Not, technically, a street, avenue, or highway, though a carriage-way over it is a feature. Refers to an area set apart tor purposes of ornament, exercise, and arausement.2
