i An alien born who has obtained ex donatione regis letters-patent to make him a subject.^ Whence denizenize, dcnizenatioa or denization,^ and denizenship. The crown denizenizes; parliament consents to naturalization. A denizen is in a kind of middle state between an alien and a natnral-bom subject, and partakes of both. H6 may take lands by purchase or devise, but not >by inheritance — for the parent has no inheritable lilood.* But since 1870, in England, an alien may hold and dispose of property as a natural-bom subject. In South Carolina the status seems to have been created by law.
