Transfer to a successor in office, S. A passing from a person dying to a person living: as, the devolution of a title.2 "Devolution by law " occurs when the title is such that an heir takes under it by descent from an " ancestor " according to the rules of law applicable to the descent of heritable estates; and in all cases of descent, the estate of the successor is imme4iately " derived " from the " ancestor " from whom the estate descends.'
