A Dictionary of Law

" One who bears court armor, the grant of which adds gentility to a man's family." ^ Originally, a man of gentle blood; now, a person of any rank from the upper to the lowest verge of the middle classes.'' A jouf Tieyman butcher may be described as a gentleman.^ On a jury list, as, "A. B., gent.," implies that the person has either no occupation or no occupation known to the officials who made out the list.
