A Dictionary of Law
A popular name applied exclusively to United States treasury notes. When an indictment charges larceny of treasury notes, the proof may be that the notes were "greenbacks." Originally, a nick-name or slang word, derived from the color of the engraving on the back of the currency. The fact that the word, from its convenience, has come into common use, does not make it of itself a proper designation in an indictment. See Tender, Legal.
