5 The best writers represent this word as synonymous with house, and as embracing an orchard, garden, curtilage, adjoining buildings, and other appendages of a dwelling-house.^ A grant of a messuage, or of a messuage with the appurtenances, will cany the dwelling-house and adjoining buildings, and its orchard, garden, and curtilage.'
