A Dictionary of Law
A small payment to the master of a vessel for his care and trouble, paid by the owners of the merchandise laden on board, and for his own personal use, unless otherwise agreed with the owners of the vessel.* No longer considered a gratuity to the master, unless specially so stipulated. It belongs to the owners or freighters, as an increase of the freight rate.=
