That which is borne: charge, obligation, duty; also, disadvantage. Compare BE^fEFIT; Incumbrance; Onus. Burdensome. Grievous, oppressive: as, a burdensome contract. Burden of proof. The obligation imposed upon a party who alleges the existence of a fact or thing necessary in the prosecution or defense of an action, to establish it by proof. 1 Sometimes spoken of simply as "the burden."
