A situation in which two or more nations, while actually at peace with each other, are armed for possible or probable hostilities. ARMIGER (Lat.). An armor-bearer; an esquire. A title of dignity belonging to gentlemen authorized to bear arms. Kennett, Paroch. Antiq.; Cowell.
