Arura

An old English iaw term, signifying a day’s work in plowing.

I. A ploughing; a day's -vrork at

Ajrrura, L. Lat. [from arare, to plough.] A "ploughing. Una arrura; one day's work at the plough. Cowell. Bract, fol. 36 b. 230. AS. Lat.

In the Roman and civil law. A pound weight; and a coin originally weighing a pound, (called also libra); divided into twelve parts, called uncuB, (ounces,) the several multiples of which were known bydiflferent names, according to their number. Thus, two undcB, making one-sixth of the a Sy constituted what was called sextans; three, making a quarter, were denominated guadrans; four, or a third, iriens; five, quincunx; six, or onehalf, semis; seven, septunx; eight, or twothirds, hes; nine, or three-fourths, dodrans; ten, dextans; and eleven, deunx. Frequently applied in the c4vil law to inheritances; the whole inheritance being termed as, and its several proportionate parts, sextans, quadrans, (fee, as above explamed; though it was not necessary that it should always be divided into twelve parts.
