In English law. Sessions of court of assise or assize and nisi prius, formerly held by two or more commissioners called judges of assise, or of assise and nisi prius, who were twice in every year sent by the king's special commission on circuits all round the kingdom, to try by a jury of the respective counties the truth of such matters of fact as were in dispute in Westminster Hall These commissioners were judges of the superior courts of common law, the successors of the ancient justices in eyre, and usually made their circuits in the vacations after Hilary and Trinity terms. Assises, or assizes, de Jerusalem: a code of feudal jurisprudence, compiled in 1099, after the conquest of Jerusalem, for the kingdom of Jerusalem, then newly established.
