Ayel, Aiel, Aile. L. Fr. [from ael, aieul, a grandfather.] In old English practice. The name of a writ (Lat. breve de avo) which lay when a man's grandfather or grandmother was seised of lands in fee simple on the day of his or her death: and a stranger entered on that day, and abated, or dispossessed the heir of his inheritance.
