20 U.S.C. § 9501 — in this subchapter
The term “basic research” means research—
(A) to gain fundamental knowledge or understanding of phenomena and observable facts, without specific application toward processes or products; and
(B) for the advancement of knowledge in the field of education.
26 U.S.C. § 41 — for purposes of this section
The term “basic research” means any original investigation for the advancement of scientific knowledge not having a specific commercial objective, except that such term shall not include—
(i) basic research conducted outside of the United States, and
(ii) basic research in the social sciences, arts, or humanities.
