In the civil law. A benefit or favor; any particular privilege. Dig. 1. 4. 3. Cod. 1.11. I Mackeld. Civ. Law, 182, § 189. Used in the same sense in English law, as in the old phrase beneficium clericale, the clerical privilege, commonly translated benefit of clergy.
