ARCHBISHOP OF. In English ecclesiastical law. The’ primate of all Hingland; the chief ecclesiastical dignitary in the church. His customary privilege is tocrown the kings and queens of England; while the Archbishop of York has the privilege to crown the queen consort, and be her perpetual chaplain. The Arehbislop of Canterbury has also, by 25 Hen. VLI. ¢. 21, the power of granting dispensations in any case not contrary to the holy seriptures and the law of God, where the pope used formerly to grant them, which is the foundation of his granting special licenses to marry at any placa or tima; to hold two livings, (which must be confirmed under the great seal,) and the like; and on this also is founded the right he exercises of conferring degrees in prejudice of the two universities.
