Lat. By the grace of God. A phrase used in the formal title of a king or queen, importing a claim of sovereiguty by the favor or commission of God. In ancient times it was incorporated in the titles of inferior oflicers, (especially ecclesiastical,) but in later use was reserved as an assertion of “the divine right of kings.”
