Black's Law Dictionary

In the law relating to the responsibility of an employer or principal for the negligent acts or omissions of his employe, the term "collateral" negligence is sometimes used to describe negligence attributable to a contractor employed by the principal and for which the latter is not responsible, though he would be responsible for the same thing if done by his servant.
