Black's Law Dictionary
In Roman law. A rustic or rural estate. Primarily, this term denoted an estate lying in the country, i. e., beyond the limits of the city, but it was applied to any landed estate or heritage other than a dwelling-house, whether in or out of the town. Thus, it included gardens, orchards, pastures, meadows, etc.

A rural or country estate ; an estate or piece of land principally destined or devoted to agriculture; an empty or vacant space of ground without buildings.
