A Law Dictionary, Adapted to the Constitution and Laws of the United States

crim. law. He who has begun a quarrel or dispute, either by threatening or striking another. No man is justified to strike another because he has threatened, or in consequence ‘of the use of any words. He is to seek his redress for such abuse by an appeal to the law, and not by @ violation of it.
