Bouvier's Law Dictionary and Concise Encyclopedia

Bank notes, checks, and other securities for money received as cash by banks in the place where the word is used. In the United States, the notes issued by the national banks have taken the place of those formerly issued by banks incorporated under state laws. The circulation of these notes being secured by United States bonds deposited with the treasurer of the United States, they are received as bankable money without regard to the locality of the bank issuing them.

See U. S. Rev. Stat. § 5133; Veazie Bank v. Fenno, 8 Wall. (U. S.) 533, 19 L. Ed. 482.
