Bouvier's Law Dictionary and Concise Encyclopedia
A bill of exchange accepted, or a promissory note made, by a merchant, whereby he has engaged to pay money. It is so called as being payable by him. An account is usually kept of such bills in a book with that title, and also in the ledger. See Parsons, Notes and Bills.
