Bouvier's Law Dictionary and Concise Encyclopedia
The private room of the judge. Any hearing before a judge which does not take place during a term of court or while the judge is sitting in court, or an order issued under such circumstances, is said to be in chambers. The act may be an official one, and the hearing may be in the court-room; but if the court is not in session, it is still said to be done in chambers. See In Cameba; Open Court.
