Bouvier's Law Dictionary and Concise Encyclopedia
A sum of money paid by villeins to their lords in acknowledgment of their villenage. It was paid to the lord In token of his being chief or head. It was exacted for permission to marry, and also permission to remain without the dominion of the lord. When paid to the king, it was called subjection.
