A head-dress. In England there are certain Serjeants at law who mitted to that order. It was anciently worn as a distinguishing badge. When powdered wigs were introduced, a round patch of black silk edged with white was worn on the crown of the wig as a diminutive representation of the coif and cai> Pulling, Order of the Coif.
