A term popularly applied to fire, air, earth and water, anciently supposed to be the four simple bodies of which the world was composed. Encyc. Diet. Often applied in a particular sense to wind and water, as "the fury of the elements." Gent. Diet. It has been said that "damages by the elements," and "damages by the act of God," are convertible expressions; Polack v. Pioche, 35 Cal. 416, 95 Am. Dec. 115.
