Bouvier's Law Dictionary and Concise Encyclopedia

A title given to the chief of some corporations or societies. The chief officer of certain colleges, e. g. of the University of Pennsylvania. The chief dignitary of a cathedral or collegiate church. In France, this title was formerly given to some presiding judges.
