Bouvier's Law Dictionary and Concise Encyclopedia
A place whence stones are dug for the purpose of being employed in building, making roads, and the like. In mining law it is said to be an open excavation where the works are visible at the surface. It is said to be derived from quadratarhis, a stone-cutter or squarer.

When a farm is let with an open quarry, the tenant may, when not restrained by liis contract, take out the stone; but he has no right to open new quarries. See Mines; Waste.
