One who settles on the lands of others without any legal authority; this term is applied particularly to persons who settle on the public land.

One who takes possession of a tract of public land with a view to becoming an entry man under the homestead law, except as to the limited statutory time allowed him preceding actual entry at the land oflice, is a mere squatter having no rights in the land as against the government or others; U.
