Bouvier's Law Dictionary and Concise Encyclopedia
A guardian; a keeper. This is the name given to various officers; as, the warden of a prison, the port warden of the port of Philadelphia, church- wardens. As to the latter, see Baum, Church Daw. 1 Officials over forests. They were the executive olficers of the crown, to whom its writs were addressed, and were somewhat analogous the sheriff.
